§ 56-66. Definitions.

  • As used in this article, the following words shall have the meanings ascribed to them:

    BOD (denoting the biochemical oxygen demand) means the quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory procedures in five days at 20 degrees Celsius, expressed in parts per million by weight.

    Building drain means that part of the lowest horizontal piping of a draining system, which receives a discharge from soil, waste and other drainage pipes inside the walls of the building and conveys it to the building sewer.

    Building sewer means that sewer which commences five feet outside of the inner face of the building wall and connects the building drain to the proper public sewer or other place of disposal.

    Combined sewer means a sewer designated as such by the city manager which receives sanitary sewage and stormwater.

    Natural outlet means a watercourse, pond, ditch, lake or other body of surface water or groundwater.

    Normal domestic sewage, as distinguished from sanitary sewage, means a liquid waste which does not exceed 200 parts per million of the five-day BOD by weight of 250 parts per million of suspended solid by weight.

    Private sewage disposal system means any septic tank, cesspool, or other facility intended or used for the disposal of sanitary sewage.

    Public sewer means a sewer in which all owners of adjoining properties have equal rights and is controlled by public authority.

    Sanitary sewage means the liquid or water carried waste discharged from the sanitary conveniences of dwellings (including apartment houses and hotels), office buildings, factories, or institutions.

    Sanitary sewer means a sewer which carries sanitary sewage and industrial wastes.

    Sewage means sanitary sewage together with such groundwater, surface, and stormwaters as may be present.

    Sewage treatment plant means any arrangement of devices and structures used for treating sewage.

    Sewage works means all facilities for collecting, pumping, treating and disposing of sewage.

    Sewer means a pipe or conduit for carrying water and other waste matter.

    Storm sewer or storm drain means a sewer which is expressly for the purpose of conveying stormwater, surface water, and uncontaminated industrial wastes.

    Stormwater means that part of the rainfall which reaches the sewer as runoff from natural land surface, building roofs or pavements, or as groundwaters infiltration, and uncontaminated industrial wastes.

    Suspended solids means solids that either float on the surface of or are in suspension in water, sewage or other liquids, and which are removable by laboratory filtering.
